Mark Warfel is a graduate of PA School of Arts & Design, an accomplished artist in the fields of historical, wildlife and fantasy art. Mark’s creative eye and color combinations for Native American arts & crafts were inspired at powwows and learning from other Native Americans who were willing to share their skills. Introduces kids to the fascinating world of archaeology by teaching the students to excavate a site with trowels, sifters to screen dirt, measure and map their units. Best of all, since it is a simulated dig, kids get to keep their finds. Students will be divided into two groups: Group 1 is for ages 9-12 and Group 2 for ages 13-15. Lecture and handouts will be age appropriate as well as excavation methods.

Space is limited, so call Indian Steps Museum at 717.862.3948 or email: becky@indiansteps.org to reserve your space. Deadline for rsvp is August 8th. A confirmation letter and instructions will be emailed upon rsvp.

Nature Quest for Kids

10:30 to 3:30 p.m.
An exciting new program "Nature Quest" at Indian Steps Museum for children ages 8 to 13. Children will learn how to identify common trees of PA, native plants, birds and animal tracks while having hands-on explorations of topics and hiking the grounds at Indian Steps Museum. The program will include a power point presentation and handouts for easy identification.

Cost is $20.00 per child. Pack a bagged lunch with drink labeled with child's name. Wear a hat, sunscreen, and sneakers or closed shoes. No sandals. Backpack if possible. Limited space of 15 participants.

Please join us at Indian Steps Museum on September 8th for a special program about the Peach Bottom Slate Industry and the Welsh community in the area. There will be a slate splitting demo, a lecture, and a Q & A session. Bring your curiosity for local history and industry, and feel free to share any knowledge and stories you may have. Presented by Don Robinson, a co-author of The River and the Ridge, and local history expert. Peach Bottom slate was once voted the highest quality slate in the world! It ignited a once-booming industry in Delta, PA, and surrounding areas. Explore the story of the Welsh and why they settled in our region."

Archaeology Workshop

10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. This is a Free Workshop and Information Session if you wish to sign up for the Prehistoric Excavation on October 20th. The lecture starts at 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Debbie Saylor, Curator and Research Director, introduces you to the world of archaeology and the local history of Indian Steps. Work alongside professional archaeologists as you learn how to properly excavate and identify artifacts.

11:00 a.m. Steve Nissly, lithics and flintknapper expert, presents how to identify local rock materials, how certain lithics (rocks) are more suited to create spears, knives or arrowheads. Steve will train your eye on how to recognize prehistoric stone artifacts based on color, shape and worked edges.

Rest of afternoon: Spend the day surface hunting for artifacts on the grounds of Indian Steps or visit the museum to learn more about local Indian history.

NO Need to RSVP for October 13th Only .... Just bring a friend!

Opportunity to sign up for the Oct. 20th Excavation.

Limited to the first 15 participants. Prepay in person October 13th for space on October 20th excavation.
